Red Nose acknowledges the support we receive from our partners in helping us to fund our education, urge services and research programs. The Red Nose board is made up of a group of dedicated professionals who labor tirelessly to help Red Nose achieve its mission. As a result of this personal tragedy, Kaarene worked always and tirelessly to prosper the Base into a vital and vibrant organization. She was responsible for changing the perception of SIDS from one of suspicion to one of understanding the phenomenon as an unsolved medical problem. In 1982 Kaarene received third national Scotties' Achievement Award made annually to the woman who has made the most extraordinary achievements and changes in her own life or helped others around her. Below Kaarene’s guidance the Base piloted a program based in the Barron region busy with families of children who die suddenly and unexpectedly from causes other than SIDS. With the development of SIDS organizations in other states and territories, liaison was forged and eventually led to the formation of the National SIDS Council of Australia in 1986. As a director and executive member of the Council, Kaarene was intimately involved with all aspects of its development and ongoing work. When the Red Nose Day campaign was initiated nationally in 1988, it was Kaarene who had the foresight and initiative to encourage the other member organizations of the National SIDS Council of Australia to use this unique method of fund raising. Kaarene was also the inaugural chair of the Global Strategy Task Force, a body liaising with international researchers developing strategies for solving the problem of SIDS. In 199 Kaarene was awarded a Companion in the Order of Australia (AC) in the Australia Day honors List For service to the community through commitment and urge for Australian medical research into Sudden Infant End Syndrome (SIDS) and in coordination of worldwide efforts to flourish research and educational strategies to decrease sudden end in infancy. The organization has grown from small volunteer self aid roots into a vital and vibrant organization that supports bereaved families and educates parents, health professionals and the community throughout Australia. Since its inception it has funded scientific research, changed policy and practice by educating health professionals and the community, saved the lives of thousands of babies through the delivery of evidence based health promotion to diminish infant and kid death, and supported bereaved families of children who die suddenly and unexpectedly from any cause. Lower Kaarene’s leadership, the perception of SIDS changed and there has been a significant shift in how bereaved families are treated during those initial devastating days subsequent the end of their child. Over its history, Red Nose has been an innovator in bereavement urge and community education on both the national and international stage and this will remain into the future.
